AM I STILL PINOY

PROJECT DETAILS
As a young Filipino immigrant living in New Zealand, I have been feeling increasingly disconnected from my culture and country. As representations of Filipino culture become more unavailable in my life, the definition of ‘Filipino’ gradually becomes blurry. Resulting in a deep fear of forever losing my cultural identity and becoming ‘un-Pinoy.’
This publication was my attempt to confront these growing fears and explore my dilemma by navigating my cultural identity, learning more about my culture and finding ways to stay connected to my roots. It is an ever-evolving publication that reflects my journey into the publication's main themes of what makes us Pinoy, the Effects of migration/Filipino Diaspora and the most important question of ‘Am I still Pinoy?’.
This publication is part memoir, part photo album and part essay, with content consisting of personal writings, interviews with my family and research into our family history and Filipino culture. It is a narrative-driven publication that utilises graphic design and storytelling techniques to create an expressive and impactful work, helping me to share my story and to navigate through my cultural identity.
